How I Got Into Internet Marketing (Part 3)

calendar October 1, 2007

This is the story of how I got to where I am today in internet marketing.  Click here for Part 1 and Part 2 of the story.

I left off last time with how I registered at Clickbank and chose my first product to promote.  The product I chose was in the dating and relationships genre.  I knew I would have to do a great deal of writing about the subject and product, and I thought that relationship advice is relatively easy to write about…even if you are not an expert.

Around the same time as I got started with Clickbank, I also discovered the now-popular marketing approach named Bum Marketing.  Created by a guy named Travis from Arkansas, Bum Marketing essentially teaches you to target less popular search terms in articles that you submit to directories such as Ezine Articles.  The concept is based on utilizing the pagerank and trust authority of the strongest article sites to get you into the top search results for less competitive terms.  I have to say that I am a believer in Bum Marketing, and I encourage all newbies to check out Travis’ site.

I found my first success in internet marketing by combining my first Clickbank product with Bum Marketing techniques.  As luck would have it, one of my first articles received a top spot in Google rankings for a high volume search term.  I was getting a few sales each week even though in hindsight my landing page was atrocious.  Once I realized that I had a steady stream of visitors from my article, I kept tweaking my landing page (which eventually turned into a full website) until I was converting about 2% of my visitors.  Finally I was making money online!

I can’t tell you how much a little success can do for your self-esteem.  After I got my first check from Clickbank I was like a junkie on crack.  Everyday I did something new to drive more traffic to my main site.  Now the site is starting to get some steady search traffic on its own and my revenue has increased to a nice level for what is basically a glorified sales page.  While I will always attribute some of my success to pure luck, the good fortune has driven me to be even more determined.
